Class description

This course will be changed to HIST 490 before the beginning of Spring quarter.

This seminar examines the historical development of some of the major forms of communication, including rumors, story telling, newspaper, magazine, TV, and the internet, and how they contributed to the formation of popular mentality and public opinion.

Student learning goals

Gain knowledge of the historical development of various forms of communication.

Examine the relationship between these forms of communication and formation of popular mentality and public opinion.

Learn to study a subject through a historical perspective.

General method of instruction

Reading and discussions.

Recommended preparation

Recommended for juniors and seniors.

Class assignments and grading

Readings, writing short essay/book reviews, leading discussions, participating in discussions.

Completing the above listed assignments.
