Contemporary German Play

Reading, analysis, and performance of one play by a contemporary German author. Taught in German. Performance scheduled for last week of quarter. Prerequisite: GERMAN 203.

Class description

Spring 2008

The goal of this course is the preparation of a play to be performed on May 30th and 31st. The play is Grimms Märchen and consists of three fairy tales adapted from original versions in the Grimms’ famous collection, Kinder- und Hausmärchen: “Hänsel und Gretel”, “Die drei Männlein im Walde”, and “Der Räuberbräutigam”. There are possibilities for solo singers and for musicians as well; the performance may include songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, a compilation of folk songs and poems collected by Arnim and Brentano. Students interested in technical aspects of the theater such as sound, light, costume and set design are encouraged to contact the instructor to check on available opportunities; the majority of the students will be expected to perform.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Recommended preparation

All students must have good reading and speaking abilities in German. Prerequisite: German 203 or instructor approval.

Class assignments and grading

Class time will be spent largely on rehearsal, which will include improvisation and other acting exercises in German. Homework will consist of memorizing lines, reading the original fairy tales adapted for this performance, some short writing assignments, and reading other fairy tales in the Grimms’ collection associated with the theme of the production: Eine Reise durch den Wald. There are no extensive reading or writing assignments as the focus will be on rehearsal and performance.

The final grade will be based on the writing assignments, some short vocabulary quizzes, and class participation, including class discussions, rehearsals, and the final performances. The performances will be in lieu of a final exam.

The information above is intended to be helpful in choosing courses. Because the instructor may further develop his/her plans for this course, its characteristics are subject to change without notice. In most cases, the official course syllabus will be distributed on the first day of class.
