Class description
The purpose of this course is: 1) to expand and deepen your knowledge about qualitative research methodologies, 2) to practice the use of qualitative research techniques, and 3) to discuss current issues in qualitative methodology including research ethics, representation and positionality. We will discuss the dialectical relationship between social theory and research methodology, with an emphasis on the contributions of feminist theory to research practice. A key component of the course is to put specific research techniques into practice, including participant observation,interviewing,textual and discursive analysis, fieldnotes, transcriptions and writing/presenting our research. We will also discuss emerging trends in qualitative research, including multi-sited/open system ethnography and participatory research. Geog 315 or equivalent Social Science research methods courses recommended.
Student learning goals
Understand the influence of social theory on research methodologies
Identify appropriate research techniques for specific research questions.
Perform interviews, participant observation, discourse analysis, textual analysis; record field notes,transcribe interviews; document and present research results.
Discuss ethical issues in reserach and how power relations are reflected in the research process.
General method of instruction
This is a seminar. Students are expected to complete readings and come to class ready to actively participate in discussions.
Recommended preparation
Geog 315 or equivalent Social Science research methods courses recommended. Students are expected to have had some prior exposure to social theory.
