Public Presentation in Urban Horticulture

Students learn to make public presentations in scientific, professional, and popular contexts and to interpret technical information for professional and lay audiences. Support materials, such as audiovisuals and graphics are discussed. Offered: W.

Class description

Students will receive instruction in how to prepare and give two types of talks or public presentations. They will learn how to use an overhead, a slide projector, microphones and Powerpoint. They will leave the course, fully aware and prepared to give all types of short to long presentations. This course has been given for 25 years and previous graduates say it is one of the best ones for preparing them for their careers.

What is important when preparing and giving any talk?

General method of instruction

The first 3-4 weeks are spent reviewing methodology and equipment. The latter part of the quarter is when the students present their two-15 minute presentations. The talks are reviewed by listening and then further interaction with the fellow students and the instructor

Recommended preparation

None ...we take students of all levels .. this is a required course for all urban hort/ecology MS etc. students and quite suitable for other grad students as well as upper class students. Student choose their own topics.

Class assignments and grading

The students give two 15 minute talks during the quarter. One is given using the scientific method as if you were giving an academic paper or seminar. The other is one prepared and given to a community type audience. The other class students critique the talks, the critiqes are gathered together and then the instructor meets with the student for final evaluation.
