Respectful Death: Exploring Interdisciplinary End-of-Life Care

Explores end-of-life care and develops the skills necessary to provide respectful care in a collaborative, team setting to patients and families living with serious life limiting illness during the last 6-12 months of life. Offered: jointly with B H 517.

Class description

Health care professionals encounter dying patients and others with terminall illness where death is expected, but not imminent. This course is designed to assist students in exporing important elements of palliative care in assisting dying patients and their families. Students taking this course have felt much more comfortable talking with and caring for dying patients as a result of the experiences in this course.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Instructional methods are variable, including minilectures,panels, discussion, case presentation, role play, attending team meetings and hospice facilities.

Recommended preparation

Students in graduate training in any of the health care professions are eligible for this course, no specific preliminary course required.

Class assignments and grading

Emphasis is placed on attendance and participation in the class sessions, many of which are experiential in nature and cannot be replaced by reading or other methods. Brief readings will be assigned. Students will attend an interdisiciplinary team meeting to be arranged, to better understand the team approach to hospice care.

Attendance in course sessions, participation in assigned team meetings, and completion of the readings. This quarter the course is offered on a C/N (Credit,No Credit) basis.
