Introduction to research into European topics and to the analysis of problems.
Class description
We will discuss intelligentsia as a social group: its historical origins, social composition, styles of life, ideological involvements and relations with other social groups. We will focus on the 19th - 20th century Russia and Poland, but will also seek for analogies/ comparisons in Western Europe.
Student learning goals
Improved knowledge of the East-Central European social and political history, history of ideas and of every day life.
Ability to compare issues from various historical, political and geographical contexts.
Ability to analyze various historical sources, such as fiction, memoirs, journalism, essays, etc.
General method of instruction
Lecture combined with text analysis and discussion
Recommended preparation
No knowledge of foreign languages required.
