Survey of the cultures and history of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania from the Viking Age to the present, with particular attention to Baltic-Scandinavian contacts. Offered: jointly with SCAND 344.
Class description
This course will survey the history of the Baltic Sea regions from the Viking Age to the present, with particular attention to the East Baltic (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania). Class discussion will include critical analysis of primary documents.

Learn a timeline of Baltic history from the Viking Age to present, in the broader context of North European history.
Learn source-critical methods of reading primary and secondary sources. Learn to write a source critique.
Learn how to find historical sources on the Internet, in the library, and in online scholarly indexes.
Learn how to propose a question in historical research, and how to find the sources you need to answer it.
