Class description
This is an overview course in order to better understand how public gardens function. A broad range of topics from curation, planning, financing, conservation, and education issues are covered. Students planning to go work with ANY kind of involvement with public gardens, parks, zoos, native plant districts, environmental agenices will benefit
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
Lectures by John A. Wott and Sarah Reichard. Some guest lectures. Students prepare two team projects per quarter..one around curatorial or selection of collections and the other on some type of educational program. There are also 3 1/2 day Saturday field trips to some area gardens.
Recommended preparation
Some knowledge of plants, although we have found students of other disciplines, especially Landscape Architecture and Urban Forestry have benefitted and enjoyed the course. Visit with instructors if in doubt.
Class assignments and grading
Two team projects during quarter, and one short general exam.
