Time Schedule:
Eric A Smith
ENVIR 450
Seattle Campus
Format may range from seminar/discussion to formal lectures to laboratory or modeling work.
Class description
This is a one-time-only course to be offered Spring 2001. It consists of two components: a lecture series (sponsored by the Program on Environment and several other UW units), and a seminar limited to 15 seniors and graduate students. The lecture series is open to the public and the UW community at large, but only students registered for ENVIR 450 (plus the speakers and the course instructor) will attend the one-hour seminar following each lecture. The lecture series will feature visiting academics and professionals known for their work on various aspects of the ongoing debates concerning the definition, conservation, and restoration of natural/cultural environments.
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
In addition to attending the lectures, students enrolled in ENVIR 450 will read materials recommended by each speaker prior to his or her talk, submit written discussion questions via email in advance of each session, and meet with the instructor and each speaker for a one-hour seminar immediately following each lecture.
Recommended preparation
We encourage enrollment of students from a variety of disciplines in the social and life sciences and the humanities, in order to foster dialogue across fields of inquiry often isolated from each other. Since space is very limited, only those seniors or graduate students with strong interests in the topic will be admitted; the instructor will also seek to ensure that the student mix is representative of the diversity of relevant disciplines.
Class assignments and grading
Readings, email submission of discussion topics, lecture attendance, seminar discussion participation.
Course is CR/NC only. Credit will be based on satisfactory completion of assignments (see above).
