In-depth study of a current environmental health topic.
The course entitled "ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE AND INFECTIOUS DISEASE" will use multidisciplinary approach to address the impacts of environmental change (including climate change) on infectious disease. Concepts include categories of environmental change; infectious disease emergence/re-emergence; environmental aspects of infectious disease exposure, acquisition, and progression; pathogen growth/survival in the environment; historical and societal perspectives; surveillance; and strategies for control.
Student learning goals
Define and describe infectious disease emergence and re-emergence.
Discuss the relative importance of infectious diseases and non-infectious impacts of environmental change.
Discuss strategies for detecting and combating emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, including surveillance, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
Recognize and discuss controversial issues related to the interplay between environmental change and infectious disease.
