Environmental Risk and Society

Examines environmental health risk assessments and explores how such assessments are viewed by affected communities. Reviews scientific risk assessment methods, risk perception, risk communication, and public participation processes. Examines the influence of advocacy and special-interest publications on risk assessment debates. Offered: W.

Class description

This course will serve as an introduction to a spectrum of occupational injuries and illnesses, including approaches to diagnosis, medicolegal documentation, workplace evaluation, and etiologic study. Emphasis will be placed on organ systems biology and the application of tools from toxicology, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, and evidence-based medicine.

Readings and discussion preparation; written and oral project.
