Poetry in the modernist mode, including such poets as Yeats, Eliot, Pound, Auden, and Moore.
Class description
For SUMMER 2007: This course explores the interaction between the poetic experiments that defined English language modernist poetry in the work of W. B. Yeats, T. S. Eliot, William Carlos Williams and Wallace Stevens and the visual, popular and political culture which modernist poets faced during the period between World War I and World War II. We will read the primary texts closely and contribute individual and group presentations on modernist poetics and poems written against the grain of modernism by some of their successors.
