Investigation of curriculum and instruction in mathematics at the elementary-school level; review of research and preparation of proposals. Prerequisite: graduate standing.
Class description
When people compare classrooms and schools, they often focus on the curriculum in use. However, empirical studies have shown that classroom organization and discourse shape much of what students learn. In this course, we will examine ways of looking at discourse in mathematics classrooms.
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
We will read seminal works in the study of discourse in the mathematics classroom, looking at multiple contexts and grade levels. In addition, we will watch video examples to apply these analytic tools.
Recommended preparation
This seminar will be of interest to students pursuing studies in: mathematics education; classroom discourse; studies of learning through analysis of discourse; and equitable learning environments.
