Field Survey of Wildland Soils

Study of soils in remote sites about which little information is available. Focus is field trip in Cascade Mountains just north of Glacier Peak with prior study of hiking area, soil and ecosystem changes, and wilderness use. Offered: S.

Class Description

The focus of this course is a 5-day hike in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. The field trip will examine soils in relation to vegetation, elevation, parent materials and other ecosytem changes.

2 Lecture sessions (one 3 hour lecture before the field trip and one 2 hour lecture after the field trip) 1 5-day field trip

Recommended preparation

no prerequisites are required, however if you have not taken a previous soils course some background readings are suggested; contact the instructor

Class Assignments and Grading

Assignments include: 1 field quiz 1 short campfire presentation completing field notes Field trip report

Field Quiz 20% Field Presentation 20% Field Trip Report and Field Notebook 40% Participation 20%
