Class description

This course is an introduction to some of the major traditional performing arts of North, South, and South East Asia. We will cover such forms as dance theatre, doll theatre, and mask theatre from Japan, China, India, and Indonesia. The emphasis of this class is on understanding performance forms in their historical and contemporary social, religious, and political contexts as well as in hands-on participation in their performance techniques. We will also consider how and why these traditional forms inform, change, and reflect their home culture's practices concerning gender, race, class, and ability. Course requirements include attending performances, lectures, and exhibitions outside of class time.
