Class description
This class recognizes sex and disability as intimately related concepts. We will examine the intersections between disability studies, a field that addresses disability as difference, and topics in gender and sexuality studies. The connections between disability and sex generate questions about the cultural meanings of the body, medicalization, desire, privilege, and normalcy. This course will explore key conversations, emerging scholarship, and fictional and narrative accounts about disabled people and sexuality, feminist disability studies, queer theory intersecting with disability studies, reproductive politics, and the history and political ramifications of binaries that create various “others.� Our approach to the material will emphasize the ways that ableism is interconnected with sexism, homophobia, racism, classism, and other systems of oppression.
