Special studies designed to address contemporary and historical concerns in the field of dance.
Class description
This course is an overview of Chinese history and ideas such as Tai Chi, the I Ching, and Taoism. The final weeks will be spent viewing Western choreographies and analyzing them through the lens of ancient Chinese culture.
Student learning goals
To provide students with a basic knowledge of the Eastern philosophies that have influenced Western dance
To engage in creative and critical inquiry.
General method of instruction
Lecture, discussion, observation.
Recommended preparation
Major and Minor in dance and/or interested in Chinese culture.
Class assignments and grading
Reading, reading responses, final paper and presentation.
Participation 20% Reading responses 40% Final paper and presentation 40%
