Jazz Technique I

Introduction to jazz technique.

Class description

In this class we will study not only the Jazz genre but Theatre Dance as a whole. We will work on the movement vocabulary of different eras and the signature styles of choreographers that have made an impact to musical theatre, (Bob Fosse, Jerome Robbins, Michael Bennett, Gene Kelly, Jack Cole, Agnes de Mille and others.)

Student learning goals

To understand and apply what “style” in Theatre Dance means

To gain awareness of the importance of details required in the different styles by working on pure body isolations

To investigate how historical aspects of an era influenced the way people moved

To learn how a dancer can express him/herself within the parameters of very specific movement

To understand the heightened dynamics and the sharp “attack” required in Theatre Dance

To learn how to use intention as the main drive of a musical phrase

Please come prepare to dance on the first day of class!

Class assignments and grading

There will be viewing of video excerpts from different musicals and styles of dance assigned through out the course (links will be provided via Catalyst Web.)

100% class participation
