Introduction to Dance

Introduces dance as an art form. Lectures in dance appreciation. Studio experience in various dance forms: may include ballet, modern dance, musical theatre/jazz, and dance competition. Includes attendance at outside events.

Class description

The objective of the class is to broaden the beginning dance student’s knowledge of the body and different forms of western concert dance by developing ballet, modern and jazz dance techniques. Class focuses on anatomically sound technique, with respect for individual physical limitations. Course emphasizes knowledge of ballet, modern and jazz dance vocabulary, sound alignment, deep muscular core support, and efficient movement mechanics, as well as qualitative and expressive musical phrasing.
