Literary criticism and theory from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance through the eighteenth century to, but not including, Kant. Offered: jointly with ENGL 508.
Class description
AUTUMN 2008. The course will be organized under four basic headings: hermeneutics (theory of interpretation), rhetoric (art of persuasion/eloquence), poetics (principles of literary creation, esp. after the rediscovery of Aristotle's Poetics), aesthetics (theory of perception, esp. as influenced by Locke's psychology). Previous or concurrent study of Plato and Aristotle (e.g. in C LIT 507) would be helpful, but by no means essential.
