Class description
This class accompanies BSE 201 for Bioresource Science and Engineering majors and is limited to BSE majors ONLY. It provides introductory laboratory experience in pulp and paper fundamentals, and introduces students to commercial production of paper products through field trips to local mills. This year, field trips include a sawmill, kraft pulp mill, recycled paperboard mill, and a biomass energy plant. Laboratory experience is gained in learning how to make industry standard handsheets and a laboratory on biofuel synthesis. This course is restricted to declared BSE majors only.
Student learning goals
Become familiar with the making and use of paper handsheets in paper production and analysis.
Become familiar with the making and use of biodiesel fuel
Be introduced in person to operations in various pulp, paper, and bioproducts facilities in the Puget Sound area.
