Class description
This class will expose students to active research areas or controversies in different branches of ecology, as well as giving them an appreciation of the breadth of ecological expertise among both faculty and students on the UW campus. Week-long units on different aspects of ecology are presented by faculty from units across campus, including Biology, Forest Resources, Ocean and Fisheries Sciences, and other units as appropriate. Readings dealing with significant issues in the field will be assigned for each topic. Class organization is determined by the visiting unit leaders, but may includes lectures, Q&A with the instructor, and large and small group discussions.
Student learning goals
Students will become familiar with important questions and useful analytical tools in diverse fields of ecology.
Students will read primary scientific literature in diverse fields to understand different approaches to ecological issues.
Students will discuss papers in diverse groups to appreciate how students from different academic backgrounds approach problems.
General method of instruction
