Class description

Parade of Stars: This class introduces undergraduate students to the broad spectrum of research conducted by the faculty in the Biology Department, and also provides insights into what it is like being a researcher in biology. Each week, a faculty member will speak about their research and give a tour of their lab. The students will get to read some of the faculty's original research papers and discuss and critique what they learn from these papers and the presentations.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Each week will start with 30 minutes discussion of last week's talk. Then the faculty member will come in and give a 45 minute presentation with questions afterwards, which will be followed by a 30 minute tour of the lab.

The students have to prepare for each class by reading the paper of the speaker for that day. Afterwards, they will write a critique of the presentation and paper.

Recommended preparation

BIOL 102, BIOL 162, BIOL 203, or BIOL 220.

Class assignments and grading

The students will write a critique of the faculty presentation and paper(s) each week.

They will be evaluated based on the quality and depth of their writing. These critiques will be made available to faculty.
