Class description
Course Description: This seminar course will cover topics related to the molecular and cellular mechanisms of cancer development and treatment. First, we will discuss the mechanisms of cancer initiation, progression and metastasis. Once students have gained an understanding of how cancers arise we will examine traditional cancer treatments as well as new, targeted therapies. Lastly, we will discuss groundbreaking advances in immunotherapies and potential pitfalls and limitations in harnessing the immune system to fight cancer.

Students will learn the molecular and cellular basis of the pathogenesis of cancer.
Students will learn about the varied therapeutic approaches to treating cancer.
Students will learn how to read, evaluate, and present primary literature on cancer.
Students will learn how to critically review and interpret scientific literature.
Students will learn the skills necessary to present scientific data to an audience of their peers.
General method of instruction
Approximately half of class time will be devoted to lecture and half to discussion of assigned research articles.
