Class description
This seminar course will cover topics related to neurological disorders and the ethical implications of prevention, testing, and treatment. Students will learn about three classes of disorders including mood, neurodegeneration, and pain. In addition to didactic lectures that will provide broad topic overviews, students will use primary literature to explore current theories on the biological basis of specific disorders including depression, Huntington’s Disease, and chronic pain. Finally, the ethical ramifications of prevention strategies, testing, and treatment of these specific disorders will be debated and discussed as a group. Attendance is required on the first day.
Student learning goals
Students will gain a general understanding of current hypotheses in the field of mood, neurodegenerative, and pain disorders.
Students will learn how to identify key concepts presented in journal articles and how to present these concepts to a group.
Students will be able to recognize ethical issues that might arise from testing and treating these disorders.
