Supervised readings and group discussion. Prerequisite: BIOL 355.

Class description

Microbes to Mammals-the Evolution of Immunity.

From the beginning of time pathogens have tried to freeload off of others. For almost as long, organisms have been fighting back. This seminar course covers the evolution of the immune response from bacteria to human beings. Starting with the simple systems of bacteria we will progress through increasing complexity to discuss immunity in plants, invertebrates, birds and mammals. Emphasis will be placed on reading and discussing primary literature.

Attendance at the first day of class is required.
