Natural History of Birds

Field, lecture, and laboratory study of birds framed in biological theory rather than taxonomy. Breeding systems, brood parasitism, appearance, molt, migration, orientation, social behavior, song, and flight are emphasized. Includes Saturday and weekend field trips for which students are required to share a portion of transportation costs. Prerequisite: BIOL 220; recommend BIOL 350 or BIOL 356. Offered: irregularly.

Class description

Explores all aspects of avian biology, including evolution, functional morphology, physiology, ecology, behavior, and conservation. Surveys taxonomy and identification of major groups, focusing on birds of the Pacific Northwest. Laboratory includes frequent local field trips. One weekend field trip required (students will share a portion of transportation costs). Prerequisite: BIOL 220; recommend BIOL 350 or 354.
