Literature, Film, and Culture of the Former Yugoslavia and the Yugoslav Successor States

A travelogue through the intellectual and cultural landscape of the former Yugoslavia and the Yugoslav successor states, studying the select literary works, films, and other artifacts, with the exploration of both how these phenomena are a part of their intellectual and historical environment, and how they transcend and change it.

Class description

Bora Cosic, Aleksandar Hemon, Semezdin Mehmedinovic, Dubravka Ugresic, Slavenka Drakulic are the South Slavic (former Yougoslav¨s) writers whose literary works will be discussed during the course. What does it mean to be in exile and to be a subject of your own writing? They have written novels, short stories, poetry and essays. They will be read and analyzed in the class.

General method of instruction

Students will read selected literary works and engage in class discussions.

Recommended preparation

Keep up with reading assignments and participate in class discussions.

Class assignments and grading

Grades are assigned based on short essays about each title read and discussed in the class as well as on a term paper on the topic of students' choosing.
