Instructor Class Description

Time Schedule:

Ana M. Larson
ASTR 102
Seattle Campus

Introduction to Astronomy

Emphasis on mathematical and physical comprehension of nature, the sun, stars, galaxies, and cosmology. Designed for students who have had algebra and trigonometry and high school or introductory level college physics. Cannot be taken for credit in combination with ASTRO 101 or ASTRO 301.

Class description

"The success of the physical sciences derives from developing a conceptual understanding of nature whose precise expression is mathematical. Conceptual and mathematical descriptions are one and the same, with the mathematical description allowing predictions which are the essence of physical science." In this course (as contrasted with ASTR101), we delve deeply into the mathematics and physics of the Universe--at least as far as algebra and trigonometry will take us.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Interactive lecture sessions, student-driven discussions, supporting exercises in sections. The textbook forms the foundation for our studies, and the lectures will endeavor to expand upon difficult concepts and those that are most interesting (often these are one and the same concept!).

Recommended preparation

Active knowledge of algebra and trigonometry and basics of elementary physics. Please note: the college-level physics courses are NO LONGER prerequisites. The registration has been updated, and this catalog will be the next time changes go through.

Class assignments and grading

Applicable exercises and exams.

Exercises and exams.

The information above is intended to be helpful in choosing courses. Because the instructor may further develop his/her plans for this course, its characteristics are subject to change without notice. In most cases, the official course syllabus will be distributed on the first day of class.
