ART History and Criticism

Class description

WINTER 2006, Undergraduate seminar in Italian Renaissance art: "Italian Renaissance Art and Ancient Art: An enduring attraction" The word "Renaissance" comes from the French and means "rebirth" - the rebirth of ancient learning and art. We shall investigate the many prototypes of Italian Renaissance art that had their origin in the classical past and trace them in style, meaning and transformation in the Renaissance.

There will be weekly readings and papers in regard to them. The class meets every Thursday in Room 312 in the School of Art Building from 12:30 to 3:20.

Class assignments and grading

Grades will be determined by class participation, weekly readings and one-page papers, and a final written research paper.
