ART History and Criticism

Class description

SPRING 2005, "Edo to Meiji" Japanese Prints at the Time of Yoshitoshi (1839-1892)" This course features the woodblock prints of Taiso Yoshitoshi, his teachers, and his contemporaries. The focus will be the artistic and cultural contexts of Yoshitoshi's era (ca. 18501890). A special feature of the class will be the opportunity to study first-hand in the classroom a large number of actual prints by the artists. Students will develop an understanding of the content and production of the prints. Readings will be drawn from secondary texts and Edo/Meiji texts, all in English.

General method of instruction

Lecture and discussion including slides, readings, and the first-hand examination and discussion of woodblock prints.

Recommended preparation

Recommended: strong background in Japanese art history; or course work in Edo or Meiji literature or history; or permission of the instructor (jasbooks@u.washington.edu). When you begin the class you should already be familiar with Edo ukiyoe. Enthusiasm for the subject matter.

Class assignments and grading

Lively class participation through discussion of readings and works of art. Short writing assignments. Midterm exam (essays and identifications) and final paper (6-8 pages).

Class participtation, mid-term exam, final paper, and additional writing assignments.
