ART History and Criticism

Courses on special topics, frequently by visiting faculty, which cannot be offered on a continuing basis. Consult art history office for subjects offered.

Class description

The course will offer a focused exploration of the visual arts in 17th-century Rome, including painting, sculpture, architecture, and ephemera. Topics and themes will include the historical contexts for stylistic change, the revolutionary art of Caravaggio, early modern Catholic spirituality, festivals and pyrotechnic machines, Bernini's theatrical productions, and competing visions for sculptural practice.

Student learning goals

Gain familiarity with the visual arts in 17th-century Rome.

Gain familiarity with the themes which have structured scholarly inquiry in this field.

Develop proficiency in analyzing and evaluating scholarly arguments in art history.

Increase proficiency in constructing interpretations in art history.

Refine skills of written and oral presentation of research.

General method of instruction

Combination of lecture and discussion; emphasis will be upon discussion in a seminar-like format.

Recommended preparation

Previous coursework in Renaissance and/or seventeenth-century art is recommended, or check with instructor.

Class assignments and grading

Short writing assignments building towards a research paper; class presentations if scheduling permits.

Grades will be based primarily upon evaluation of writing assignments.
