Class description
Topic for Winter Quarer 2008: "Artemisia and All That: Gender and Early Modern Art." The course will examine the work of women artists, primarily in Italy, in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. We will consider the interpretive issues raised by their art, the rediscovery of these artists through the initiatives of feminist art history, and new directions in scholarship on gender and early modern art.
Student learning goals
Gain familiarity with the visual production of women artists in Italy from the 16th-18th centuries.
Understand the methods and approaches that have structured scholarly inquiry into art produced by women.
Develop proficiency in analyzing and evaluating scholarly arguments in art history.
Increase proficiency in constructing interpretations in art history.
Refine skills of written and oral presentation of research.
General method of instruction
Class sessions will focus upon analysis of images and discussion of readings, with some supplemental lecturing.
Recommended preparation
300-level course in Renaissance or Baroque art, or by permission of professor
Class assignments and grading
Short writing assignments and a final research paper.
Evaluation of written work.
