Class description
Spring 2009 Impressionism and Post-Impressionism This Evening Degree course will cover the Impressionist Era, primarily in France, exploring the work of such artists as Manet, Monet, Degas, Cassatt, van Gogh, Gauguin, Seurat, Cezanne and Toulouse-Lautrec, placing them in the context of cultural history, and examining issues of class and gender.
Student learning goals
Students will gain knowledge of the context of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism and learn to recognize major issues.
Students will gain proficiency in visual analysis of paintings and other media.
Students will enhance their skills in writing and research.
Students will enhance critical thinking skills through a close examination of art historical and cultural concepts and issues
Students will learn to describe and contextualize paintings of the time period addressed, in terms of style and content.
Students will enhance their abilities to discuss art in general in a more analytical way through presenting ideas in the classroom.
