Class description
Winter Quarter 2007: CLASSICAL GREEK SCULPTURE The course will focus on sculpture made by Greeks throughout the eastern Mediterranean world during the 5th and 4th centuries BCE, from the end of the Archaic period through early Hellenistic times. Major sculptural programs such as the Parthenon, the Mausoleum, and the "Alexander" Sarcophagus will share the spotlight with individual sculptures such as the Delphi Charioteer, the Riace Warriors, and a newly-discovered masterpiece from northern Greece that has been associated with Alexander the Great. Discussion will focus on the way that the art reflects the social, political, and cultural context of its own time and the active roles that the art played in that world. The course will also explore the heritage of Greek sculpture, including the way it shaped Roman art and its impact on Western art.
