Class description
"Art since World War 2" is a survey of significant activity and ideas in the arts since 1945. It offers an overview of the major periods and movements, styles and trends in the arts of the United States and Western Europe. It also attempts through a series of challenging readings to generate discusion about critical issues. These include: the role if the body, the promlematic of figuration, the notion of the avant-garde (or its impossibility), representation as a semiotic problem, gender and sexuality, modes of production, authorship and reception, etc. Because discussion is an integral part of the course, class participation is not only required but also vital to the success of the class as well as your grade.
