Class description

Arts and architecture of Europe and America from Romanticism to the present. Exemplary artworks, artists and art issues will be examined in themselves and in relation to each other and to their cultural matrix.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Lectures, student projects related to artworks and artsites, discussions, directed writing projects.

Recommended preparation

Basic knowledge of European & American histories; plus some period experience in the historical study of visual arts.

Class assignments and grading

Textbook plus assigned articles and chapters from other sources; study visits to artworks and sites; supplementary visual study; writing assignements.

visual acuity and knowledge, plus historical understanding and information, as manifested in discussion, written assignments and in-class exams.
