Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Art

Arts and architecture of Europe and America from Romanticism to the present.

Class description

This course will cover art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries up to the present, focusing on the major artistic movements and styles of Europe and North America, with an emphasis on the cultural, political and historical contexts of Western art. Students will learn to recognize styles, themes and issues in art history while developing critical thinking skills. Students will gain an understanding of such major movements as Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, in the nineteenth century, and the diverse artistic movements of the twentieth century such as Cubism, Fauvism, Futurism, Dada and Surrealism, Mexican Modernism, Abstract Expressionism and contemporary art.

Recommended preparation

Survey of art history, background in art.

Class assignments and grading

Writing assignments will consist of two short papers and a reading journal There will also be two tests.

Written work, class participation and tests.
