Southern Baroque Art

Art of Italy and Spain, circa 1590 to circa 1710.

Class description

Introduction to the art and architecture of the 17th Century. The course analyzes the emergence of Baroque art out of late Mannerism, its early development in Rome, and spread to other European centers. Consideration is given to issues of style, patronage, setting, reception, religious meaning, and the bibiliographic tradition. Two short papers acquaint students with methods for approaching the period, from formal analysis to thematic, interdisciplinary investigations.
