Art of Italy and Spain, circa 1590 to circa 1710.
Class description
This course will introduce you to the art of Italy and Spain, c. 1590 to c. 1710. The first part of the course will examine the emergence of new forms of painting, sculpture, and architecture in the international milieu of Italy in the early decades of the seventeenth century and investigate the historical contexts of these changes. With this foundation, we will then explore the subsequent development, dissemination, and transformation of these forms in Italy and Spain through themes drawn from recent scholarship.
Student learning goals
You will gain familiarity with the painting, sculpture, architecture, and ephemeral arts of seventeenth-century Italy and Spain and with the themes which have structured scholarly inquiry into these works.
You will build skills of critical reading and analysis of scholarly arguments in art history.
You will gain experience in the practice of various forms of art historical and scholarly writing, including visual analysis, critical analysis of an article, and the formulation of an original argument.
General method of instruction
Combination of lecture and structured discussion.
Recommended preparation
Some previous art history helpful, but not essential.
Class assignments and grading
Midterm and final exams incorporating both identifications and essays; three short writing assignments that build on each other.
