Greek Art and Archaeology

Material remains and the developing styles in sculpture, vase painting, architecture, and the minor arts from the Geometric to the Hellenistic periods; illustrated by slides. Principal sites and monuments, as well as techniques and methods of excavation, are examined in an attempt to reconstruct the material culture of antiquity. Offered: jointly with CL AR 341.

Class description

Material remains and developing styles in sculpture, vase painting, architecture, and the minor arts from the Geometric to the Hellenistic periods. Principal sites, monuments, techniques and methods of excavation are examined in an attempt to reconstruct the material culture of antiquity. Appreciation of Greek Art and, to some degree, its impact on Western art: you’ll learn to look and what to look for. Some consideration will also be given to the major excavation sites.

General method of instruction

Lectures illustrated by slides. Later in the quarter students take a more active role as “Virtual” excavators.

Recommended preparation

An interest in the Greeks and their art.

Class assignments and grading

There is a reading assignment for each class, ca 20-35 pp. These pages also contain illustrations. Some slides are placed for review in the UGL.

Two examinations: midterm and final. I do not grade on a curve.
