African Art and Society

Explores the ideas and notions expressed visually in sculpture, painting, ceramics, textiles, and architecture and describes their relationships to man and culture in Africa.

Class description

Explores the ideas and notions expressed visually in sculpture, painting, ceramics, textiles and architecture, and describes their relationships to man and culture in Africa. A broad ranging introduction to the arts of this vast continent from the works of hunters and gatherers to the sophisticated artistry of African Kingdoms, e.g. the Asante of Ghana, the court arts of Benin and the legacy and leadership of Sultan Njoya of Bamun. Post-Colonial creativity will complete this introduction to the arts of Africa with an examination of the relationship of tradition to modernity in the works of Sokari Dougles-Camp and Olu Oguibe.
