Survey of the indigenous arts of the Pacific Northwest Coast from the Columbia River in the south to Southeast Alaska in the north. Overview of ancient through contemporary times, focusing on the historical and cultural contexts of the arts and the stylistic differences between tribal and individual artists' styles. Offered: jointly with ANTH 331.
Class description
To be more familiar with the types and diversity of NW Coast arts, from houses and canoes ot bowls, bent-corner containers, masks and monumental carvings. To experience some of the historical and cultural changes that have taken place in the area over time.
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
Primarily a slide lecture augmented by video and demonstrative presentations.
Recommended preparation
An interest in local and regional Native American culture and peoples; art history, anthropology, linguisitics optional.
Class assignments and grading
Short essay assignments for grade and extra credit, based on outside reserach and/or reading vis-a-vis material presented in class. Exams will focus on tribal and historical styles, materials used, and identification of objects and object types shown in class.
Mid term and final exam points total, plus writing assignment scores and optional extra credit.
