Topics in ART History

Topics vary.

Class description

The history of American architecture from pre-Columbian times to the present day. Northwest architecture will be included and there will be some discussion of Historic Preservation.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Lectures illustrated with slides. Students will write two papers of 3-4 pages. There will be five half-hour essay exams scheduled in regular class time. Participation in class discussion will be strongly encouraged.

Recommended preparation

Always attend class. Take careful notes. Read the textbook (A history of American Architecture: Buildings in their Cultural and Technological Context, by Mark Gelernter) It is best to read ahead of lectures and then go over it again with your notes. Ask questions in class. Participate in discussion.

Class assignments and grading

You will be required to write two papers. One will be a comparison between two buildings selected by you from a list of options. The other will be an analysis of a historic or modern building in Seattle. In addition you will also be asked to write three one-page items reporting on visits to buildings, attendance at public lectures, etc.

The grade will be based on the assignments described above.
