Class description

This course looks at American and European female artists of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, with an emphasis on identifying the gendered issues surrounding artistic training, production, and creativity. We will examine individual women’s achievements in order to explore how their subjectivities – socially and psychically constructed, but lived in specifically personal ways – can be shown as affecting their work.

Student learning goals

Students will learn to examine artists' biographies and works of art for traces of larger social issues.

Students will become familiar with the styles and key works of art of significant artists.

General method of instruction

Lecture, discussion, and brief, informal in-class writing exercises

Recommended preparation

203 or other general art history courses (recommended but not required)

Class assignments and grading

Reading assignments from one course book and several articles. Participation, including informal, in-class written responses to the “Question of the Day.” Midterm and Final Exams. One 5-7 page paper on a critical, thematic comparison of 2, 3 artists.

The information above is intended to be helpful in choosing courses. Because the instructor may further develop his/her plans for this course, its characteristics are subject to change without notice. In most cases, the official course syllabus will be distributed on the first day of class.
