Class description
This course looks at American and European female artists of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, with an emphasis on identifying the gendered issues surrounding artistic training, production, and creativity. We will examine individual women’s achievements in order to explore how their subjectivities – socially and psychically constructed, but lived in specifically personal ways – can be shown as affecting their work.
Student learning goals
Students will learn to examine artists' biographies and works of art for traces of larger social issues.
Students will become familiar with the styles and key works of art of significant artists.
