Class description

THE ARTS OF THE MAYA--PAST AND PRESENT Nearly 8 million Maya, living in a region stretching from southern Mexico through Guatemala and into neighboring Honduras, are today's descendents of a culture that has continuously inhabited and shaped this vast region over the last 5,000 years. Heirs to an ancient civilization regarded by scholars as the most sophisticated of pre-Columbian New World cultures, this course will explore the artistry of the Maya from its beginnings at Lamanaye, the classic period of lowland rainforest cities (200-800AD), through the Spanish conquest and colonial era to contemporary times. How the Maya have survived over 500 years of external domination to remain highly creative people lies at the heart of this course.
