Class description
ArtH 202 - SURVEY OF WESTERN ART: FROM CONSTANTINE THE GREAT TO THE EARLY RENAISSANCE The course introduces major achievements in architecture, painting, mosaic, sculpture, and the decorative arts of the Mediterranean and Europe from the early Middle Ages through the early Renaissance, and examines them in the context of the history and times that produced them.
Student learning goals
Introduce fundamental tools of art history including analysis of style, subject matter, and function of works of art
Examine monuments in the context of the times that produced them, and their importance as witnesses of the history, artists and patrons that created them.
Examine the varied interplay between subject matter, style, and function across time by focusing on major themes and categories of art works, such as political art, religious art, tradition and innovation, et al.

Art H 201; Western European History and Culture introductory courses would also be useful but are not required.
