Development of mature and personal statement within context of the print form through studio practice and group discussion and critique. Processes and media emphasis varies on a revolving basis.
Class description
ART 345 Professor Scheier ARTISTS' HAND MADE BOOKS ARTIST HANDMADE BOOKS is a course focused on sequential and serial imagery. In-class and homework assignments assist with the structural and conceptual development of a book. Second half of the quarter is dedicated to an individual final project. Students work with materials they are familiar, such as drawing, collage, monotype, and water color. No projects will be developed with traditional printmaking techniques.

3 in-class binding exercises, 3 out-of-class assignments for the purpose of developing sequences, 3 slide lectures, 3 formal group critiques, 1 individual critiques, informal individual assistance in the classroom, 2 fieldtrips to Special Collections of Artists' Books
Recommended preparation
Students will develop sequences of images with materials they are familar, such as collage, drawing, painting, monotype.

1. Completion of the 3 homework assignments 3. Relationship of the structure to the concept of the book 3. Participation during binding exercises, individual and/or group critiques, and question/answer period following all lectures 4. Development of visual structure and imagery for the book’s concept 5. Application of learned knowledge from binding exercises and 3 homework assignments within the final project. 6. Preparatory work for final project including written statement, sketches, drawings, dummies, collection of source material 7. Presentation of the final project 8.
