ART 333
Seattle Campus
Exploration of the process through which artists discover and translate ideas, feelings, and concerns into images or objects. Introduction of new ways of thinking, new materials and processes in the investigation of a variety of sculpture methods and approaches.
Class description
The emphasis of this class will be on the visual qualities and meanings and of diverse sculptural materials. We will mine the visceral potential of "mixed media"--from classical materials to found objects to jell-o. Fabrication techniques will vary widely, but there will be a strong emphasis on appropriate craftsmanship for the ideas and chosen materials.
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
There will be a variety of technical demonstrations as well as presentations of contemporary and historical sculpture. A couple of visiting artists will also come and talk about their work in our small class setting. The preparatory drawings and ideas for assignments will be discussed one-on-one. The finished work will be presented for class critique.
Recommended preparation
Prerequisites and a sense of humor.
Class assignments and grading
Projects will be conceptually based, but broad enough for the students to find ample room for personal expression. Students will be required to research and develop solutions to the assignments. Expect to spend plenty of time in the studio beyond the class hours.
Grading will be based on the ambition, sophistication and successful completion of the projects. Engagement in class discussions and critiques also factors heavily into the final grade.
