Intermediate Sculpture Composition -- Public Art

Intermediate work in various media and techniques with an emphasis on the creation of public art. .

Class description

SPRING 2008: Design/Build Sculpture/Public Art Studio Students will design and then construct public artworks/sculptures for lightposts on University Ave. Every student will receive a $750.00 commission for each artwork. This is a real project with a real budget!

Student learning goals

How to propose, design, build, and install real public artworks for actual clients. How to deal with site, scale, materials, and manage an actual budget.

General method of instruction

Spring '08: Design/Build format in Sculpture studios. Intensive studio course.

Recommended preparation

SPRING 08: An interest in outdoor sculpture and public art making. Working with clients (AVE businesses and U-District Chamber of Commerce). Prerequisites: Art 272 and 273 or permission of the instructor based on previous construction/fabrication experience. email Prof. Young: jtyoung@u.washington.edu

Class assignments and grading

SPRING: Intensive studio.

SPRING: Successful completion of projects.
