Introduction to Surface

Basic techniques of dying, printing, and embellishing, with emphasis on their conceptual uses in art making.

Class description

Surface Design is that area of Fiber Arts, which emphasizes the use of dyes, printing processes, and the embellishment of cloth. This class is primarily to obtain technical skills that will be built through experimentation and work in the dye lab. You will demonstrate these skills thru a series of Material Studies. The aesthetic and conceptual implications of these processes will be explored via the completion of the projects.

40% of your grade will be determined by your Mid-Term and Final Projects 20% of your grade will be determined by your Material Studies 20% of your grade is based on your sample/sketchbook (including weekly entries and presentation) 15% for considerations of effort, participation, and improvement over time 5% cleaning
